Are you ready for the world premiere of Brocken 3 from the Germany based Alpenföhn which has been offering CPU cooler and fans since 2008? Even if there is no big difference comparing to the previous model in the same series, the asymmetrical design solves RAM compatibility issues.
Packaging and Accessories
Package is big and quality materials are used. Product images, technical specs and other information are visible. Solid foams are protecting what’s inside.
First thing you see is the multi-language installation guide as soon as opening the box. Illustrations are clear and easy to understand.
A separate box contains the Wing Boost 3 140 x 140 x 25mm PWM fan, anti-vibration grommets and two sets of installation metal wires. The 12V DC powered fan speed can be adjusted between 400-950 rpm.
Aerodynamically optimized fan blades have a special design. That works and the fan can generate enough high airflow while still being silent. The max. airflow is 91 m3/h and noise is only 19 dB(A) which is impossible to hear.
Intel and AMD installation kits are separate but the back plate is single. Thermal paste and a long screwdriver are included too. RockMount2 installation system supports:
- Intel Socket 2011, 2011-v3, 1151, 1155, 1156, 1150, 775, 1366
- AMD Socket AM4, AM3(+), AM3, AM2(+), AM2, FM1
Brushed and anodized aluminum plates aligned with a specific distance to optimize cooling performance. Heatpipes pass through them but are not visible from the top. the hole in the middle will be used for installation with the supplied screwdriver.
The large surface area and optimized airflow makes it a quiet cooler. The top layers hide special end caps of the copper heatpipes.
Five pieces of 6mm nickel-plated copper heat pipes are clearly visible. The main attraction here is the asymmetrical base design which aims to 100% RAM compatibility.
Continuous contact possible thanks to the gapless HDC technology. Copper pipes are nickel-plated against rust but needed to be shaved there.
It gets even bigger when the fan is mounted. The Brocken 3 has dimensions of 146x125x165 mm and weighs 850g including the single fan. That means the mounting kit has to be very strong and capable.
The shifted base forces heatpipes to be twisted and the result is 100% RAM compatibility.
We needed to use AMD Socket AM4 mounting holes and plastic caps help you to keep the screws in place during installation.
This is how you should place the back plate and installation takes only seconds.
The next step is coming back to the front side and mount the black plastic washers, then the dedicated AMD plate snd finally tighten the four thumb screws. As you can see, it is possible to seat cooler in any direction.
If you decide to mount this way, there is no overlap with the memory modules and hot air rises to the top of the case.
We prefer the other way around and blowing hot air to the back of the case. That makes RAM installation/reinstallation much more comfortable.
Room temperature was around 25C during tests and three coolers were compared with/without CPU overclock. We loaded and waited until temps were stabilized. Our test system:
- ASRock X370 Professional Fatal1ty
- AMD Ryzen 5 1600X
- 2 x 8 GB G.Skill Flare X DDR4-2400 RAM
- 2 GB Sapphire HD7870XT VGA
- Lite-On 128 GB M.2 SATA SSD
- Xigmatek Maverick S 600W PSU
Results show that Alpenföhn Brocken 3 in on par with Noctua’s high-end premium CPU coolers. Similarly designed single tower NH-U12S SE is marginally ahead but much more expensive and the performance difference is not huge. The Brocken 3 has the advantage of a 140mm silent fan and this is a great plus. It did not exceed 873rpms at stock speed of 3.7 GHz and 1010rpms under the 6-core 4 GHz overclock. You just can’t hear it in a closed enclosure after 1m distance.
We concluded yet another Alpenföhn CPU cooler review with positive results. The newest member of the Brocken series does not compromise on silent operation but also earns respect thanks to the impressive cooling performance. The 140mm big fan has a great contribution to that since it can supply high airflow silently. It is also possible to add a secondary fan.
The mounting kit which supports AMD Socket AM4 CPUs is robust and offers flexibility. Another plus is the conflict-free shifted design. Packaging is great and even the necessary screwdriver is included. The nickel-plated copper heatpipes and HDC base do not disappoint. the price tag €44.90 MSRP is very reasonable. For this reason, we decided to give our Gold Award. We would like to thank Alpenföhn and CaseKing for the review sample.
