When it comes to gaming, you need to have the best keyboard and mouse possible in order to gain that advantage that sometimes can mean the difference between winning or losing. Cougar has been doing their homework, and listened also to the latest trends, this is how the new Cougar ATTACK X3 RGB Mechanical Keyboard came out to be: a fully mechanical keyboard dedicated to gamers that has RGB backlight: a gamer’s dream come true. Today I will review this keyboard and see if it is all that it says it is.
Before we dive into the review, lets look at the specs:

Packaging and Contents
Cougar once again is delivering their product in a black carton box, with all the information already printed on its front side.
The back side of the packaging has even more information:
The side of the carton box clarifies which of the Cherry MX Switches is used for this particular model:
Once you open the carton box, you are greeted with the keyboard itself, which is held in place by a foam pad so it won’t be damaged during shipment. Nice touch.
Again, Cougar has only included the strictly necessary: the keyboard itself and a tiny instruction booklet:
Description and Build
As seen with the already reviewed Attack X3 Mechanical Keyboard, Cougar managed to manufacture a high quality product dedicated to gamers, the difference being that this product comes with RGB backlight (more on that later). Another difference is the presence of not one, but two USB plugs, both gold-plated:
This should have something to do with the capability of the keyboard to support unlimited simultaneous keypresses without a USB to PS/2 adapter. Gamers will rejoice, since most keyboards on the market have limitations regarding the number of simultaneous keys you can press, with the vast majority being limited to 6 simultaneous keys or less.
Flipping the keyboard we find the product badge with the electrical specs and serial number, along with industry standard logos:
This keyboard also sports foldable feet, which are covered in the area of contact with a soft rubber, so that it won’t slide away during intense gaming:
- Cougar Attack-X3 RGB Mechanical Keyboard – folded rubber feet
- Cougar Attack-X3 RGB Mechanical Keyboard – rubber feet closed
The rubber pads are pretty large and guarantee a firm position to the table:
The 1.8m braided cable has a secure attachment to the keyboard body: another nice touch from Cougar who is addressing gamers that could sometimes be a bit careless of how they transport their keyboard, maybe?
A close look at the keyboard puts in clear evidence the build quality of this product. The brushed aluminum back plate is simply gorgeous and really well detailed, down to the hex-screws on the sides…
Keys are well spaced, and feel also nice to the touch.
The num-pad is also well positioned, does not interfere with normal writing wrist positions and lets through the shiny brushed aluminum of the backplate.
The function leds are quite small, in comparison to the size of the keyboard, but they are pretty bright nevertheless.
But the most important aspect of this keyboard are the keys themselves. The Cherry MX Brown RGB Clear Switches have an actuation force of 45g and only 2mm to actuation – 4mm to bottom, and are guaranteed up to 50 million keystrokes.
Looking at the side of the keyboard, the gap between the keys and the brushed aluminum backplate is quite high, though:
As mentioned before, the Cougar UIX software is not included in the packaging, but you have to download it instead from the website.
The software is really easy to use once installed. As soon as you plug your keyboard, it will search for updates on-line and will update the keyboard firmware, in order to have always the most recent version, by the way, so do install the software before you plug the keyboard to your system.
Some peculiarities of the software are that it allows to save and share macros with other compatible devices, or even export individual macros to share them with friends.
Other features of this keyboard include the on-board memory, which allows to store up to 3 full configuration profiles directly on the keyboard itself. Switching PCs and using the same keyboard, preserving your gaming profile, is now possible.
The on-board memory also allows you to store up to 30 macros. Sweet…
Directly from the keyboard itself, or even through the UIX Software, you can change the mode on the fly, which is pretty handy:
Last but not least, and probably what is most important to gamers, is the 1000Hz polling rate that the Cougar ATTACK X3 RGB Mechanical Keyboard has, which translates in a Response Rate of only 1ms. Impressive to say the least.
A keyboard is only a keyboard, many would say. The Cougar Attack-X3 RGB Mechanical Keyboard is not, though, your run of the mill keyboard, and the many features and characteristics truly make it a special product.
First, it has RGB. Who does not like a bit of colored lights these days? Ok, maybe if you use the keyboard for work, you would cringe a bit, but gamers (and this keyboard is targeted to them) are pretty fine with the 16.8million color combinations that this keyboard is capable of.
Second, once installed and set up, the software is easy and intuitive. You won’t mess with it a lot to get the desired result, which is a plus. Profiles can be saved and shared, which I really find great since gamers tend to upgrade the systems quite frequently, and having their own gaming profiles saved on the keyboard rather than on the hard disk is easier, faster and prevents you to have to save the profile over and over again to the new system.
Third, the keyboard itself is quite large and somewhat heavy (a friend of mine called it “the white whale”….) reaching almost 1Kg in weight, but thanks to that, it is stable, sturdy and won’t move even during the most frenetic gaming sessions, guaranteed. The rubber feet help a lot in that, too.
Fourth, the Cherry MX Brown Tactile Switches are not exactly what a gamer looks for in a gaming keyboard, most of the time preferring switches that do not “bump” when pressed since it could decrease reaction times thus mean life or death during first person shooter games, but honestly I found it didn’t bother me. Probably because I am not a hard core gamer, but I prefer to feel when the key engages. Writing long documents (which is what I usually do with a keyboard) comes natural and does not cause fatigue: the 2mm activation distance and the 4mm needed to get to the bottom of the key press feel quite normal, for me at least. I am used to mechanical keyboards, so the Cougar Attack-X3 RGB Mechanical Keyboard is nothing new when it comes to general feel, but this particular product did impress me positively: comfortable, fast and precise while typing, I got used to it pretty soon.
The only drawback is the price. Caseking has it for € 119,90 at the time of this review. That is a lot of money for a keyboard, but this is no simple keyboard, so you really get what you pay for. You find the Cougar Attack-X3 RGB Mechanical Keyboard here
I thus decided to award the Cougar Attack-X3 RGB Mechanical Keyboard our Gold Award.
Thanks to Caseking for having sent the product object of this review.
